Margot is a communications specialist who has worked in media, politics, lobbying and the not-for-profit sector in Canberra for 2 decades. Prior to that she worked as a journalist on a small rural newspaper, a regional city newspaper and then a major national Australian masthead, The Sydney Morning Herald.
Art and words have been a lifelong passion and interest. She grew up in northern NSW and found journalism at the end of Year 12. Her ambition of working at The Sydney Morning Herald was realised eight years later. After a move to Canberra in 2002, Margot worked at Australian Parliament House as a journalist and then as a media adviser.
A lifelong interest in art led to painting and drawing classes until two friends suggested she study at Canberra Institute of Technology, Reid.
Margot studied a Diploma of Visual Arts in 2017, graduating with Distinction and at the 2017 Graduating Exhibition was awarded the Tuggeranong Arts Centre student prize of a solo exhibition.
The solo show Unchained was staged from 7-21 December 2018.
The centrepiece of the exhibition was a large chain stitch crochet piece, a creative diary of the previous 12 months. This was supported by 25 other works, including paintings that combined seascapes, landscapes and abstract works, many with the distinctive chain stitch forms.
Margot’s art practice includes working with fabric, stitching, painting, drawing and crochet. She continues to work with words and is inspired by the beauty of the landscape. Recent works have combined her photographs printed on fabric and embellished with stitch and beads.
